Take your fungal knowledge from lecture to forest floor in this guided mushroom walk—an ideal companion to our Fungal Foundations lecture. Explore the rich diversity of mushrooms found in New England’s woodlands while learning practical field techniques for identification.

Led by mycology expert Jonathan Kranz, this outdoor session will teach you how to recognize key features like cap shape, gill structure, spore prints, and habitat associations. Along the way, we’ll discuss how these remarkable organisms fit into the larger forest ecosystem—supporting soil health, decomposing organic matter, and forming symbiotic relationships with plants.

Perfect for beginners and enthusiasts alike, this walk offers a chance to connect with fungi in their natural environment.

Please dress for the weather, wear sturdy footwear, and be prepared for uneven terrain.

    ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR JONATHAN KRANZ
        

Jonathan Kranz is a certified Field Naturalist through Mass Audubon (2024) and currently serves as Vice President of the Boston Mycological Club, the oldest mushroom club in the United States. He also sits on the board of the Pioneer Valley Mycological Association and brings a wealth of ecological insight to his role as Chair of the Ayer Planning Board. With a deep passion for fungi and forest ecosystems, Jonathan works at the intersection of science, community engagement, and land stewardship.
