ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR: SHELLEY LAWRENCE KIRKWOOD

Shelley Lawrence Kirkwood has been a practicing photographer since the 1990s. She earned a BA from Hampshire College with a concentration in photography and an MFA from the University of Arizona. Her career spans work in museum curatorial departments and academia, but she identifies foremost as an artist.

Her work has been exhibited internationally and featured in numerous publications. Her first exhibition took place in 1994 at the pioneering Midtown Y Gallery in Manhattan. Recent accomplishments include a solo exhibition invitation from the Springfield Museum of Fine Art in Springfield, Massachusetts; a cyanotype collage essay published in Orion Magazine; a best-in-show designation and gold medal at the Royal Horticultural Society’s international portfolio exhibition at Saatchi Gallery in London; and an honorable mention from the Julia Margaret Cameron Awards, along with an invitation to exhibit at FotoNostrum in Barcelona in 2025.

Artist Statement

Contemplative time spent in nature is central to her artistic practice. Photography serves as a meditative tool, helping her observe and engage with the quiet architecture of daily life.

Her recent work explores themes of landscape, memory, and home through a minimalist lens—both formally and conceptually. While each series stands independently, they are unified by a desire to look closely, reveal hidden aspects of place, and reflect on her presence within them.
