Meet Your Instructor: Shelly Lawrence Kirkwood

I have been a practicing photographer since the 1990’s. I earned a BA from Hampshire College with a concentration in photography and my MFA from the University of Arizona. While I have worked in the realms of museum curatorial departments and academia, I am above all an artist.

My work has been exhibited internationally and featured in numerous publications. My first exhibition was in 1994 at the pioneering Midtown Y Gallery in Manhattan. Some of my recent accomplishments include: an invitation for a solo exhibition at Springfield Museum of Fine Art in Springfield, Mass, a cyanotype collage essay featured in Orion Magazine, a best-in-show designation and gold medal in the Royal Horticultural Society’s international portfolio exhibition at Saatchi Gallery, London, and an honorable mention with the Julia Margaret Cameron awards, along with an invitation to exhibit at Foto Nostrum, Barcelona in 2025.

About my work:

Contemplative time spent in nature is central to my art practice. I have always embraced photography as a meditative practice, a tool to help me more meaningfully observe the scaffolding of my waking life. My most recent projects have been guided by my desire to delve into themes of landscape, memory, and home. While they are independent series, they are linked together by a minimalist formal and conceptual sensibility. In looking closely, I aim to reveal latent aspects of these places and make note of my place within them.
