A member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation, she brings a deeply relational approach to understanding the natural world—one that honors plants as teachers and emphasizes reciprocity between people and the land.
Trained as a botanist and professor of environmental biology, Kimmerer is the founder and director of the Center for Native Peoples and the Environment at the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry. Her research focuses on mosses and restoration ecology, while her teaching and writing explore how Indigenous ways of knowing can inform more just and sustainable relationships with the Earth.
She is the bestselling author of Braiding Sweetgrass and Gathering Moss, acclaimed works that blend science, storytelling, and traditional ecological knowledge.
